    The Good and The Bad of Power 4 Home

    Pros -

    The guides are very detailed, with color photographs, and easy to follow.

    As you watch the Power4Home videos you can see what John is doing as he builds a set of solar panels or wind power turbine.

    The bonus material amounts to several additional courses, which add to the two main courses.

    Cons –

    It took me a little while to figure out how to download the Power4Home guides from the DVD.

    I found that I needed to print the guides so that I could read them more easily.

    The Bottom Line

    The guides and DVD you receive will be mailed to you so that it is easy to use them and refer back to them any time you want. You aren’t forced to watch them or read them online in some membership area. You own them and use them when you want to.

    I found the guides to be very well written, with photographs for each step. I recommend that you first watch the video to get an overview of what you will be doing, and then use the guide to actually build the system.

    The Power 4 Home guides show each component you will need to get and where you can buy it, and also exactly what tools you will need. They also talk about safety issues and maintenance. In short, I found the guides to be very complete.

    In this Power4Home review I have tried to tell you what I, as an owner, discovered and think about the program. I do recommend the Power4Home system to anyone that is willing to do a little work in exchange for lower or no electricity bills from then on for as long as they live in that home.

    Are energy prices continually rising? Now that is a rather dumb question. Every one knows that energy prices are going through the roof. Just take a look at your utility bill. Actually they don’t go straight up. Instead they up a little, then down a little, then back, and on, and on. But the ups tend to be somewhat larger then the downs, and over a longer time span the direction is always up.

    The good news is that by using wind power and solar power you can have homemade electricity, which can help save your bank account, particularly with the new incentives.

    Personal Tax Credit and Deductions

    Which is going up faster: energy prices or taxes? It is hard to say and it varies depending on where you live. However, it is generally safe to say that both are exploding.

    By using both new and established government programs you can attack both energy prices and taxes by going solar. The federal government will give you a tax credit of up to $2,000 if you install a solar energy system on your home. Tax credits reduce your tax liability dollar for dollar, unlike deductions which are subtracted from your gross income. Further, a majority of states also offer tax credits which you can use when paying state taxes. It varies from state to state, but you can expect to get a credit for a percentage of your installation cost or a fixed figure.

    Net Metering

    Net metering refers to state laws that require utilities to purchase power generated from your residential wind power or solar power system at the same price that the utilities charge you for electricity. Net metering has resulted in exploding sales in the solar energy industry

    With net metering you can use the utility company as a battery. While you are at work during the day, your solar system sends homemade electricity to the power company and your power meter actually runs backwards, which is reducing your power bill. When you come home at night and use power, the power meter runs forward. Thus net metering can greatly reduce, completely eliminate your utility bill, or result with the utility company actually sending you a check.

    With solar panel systems having a life of 40 years, think how much money you’ll save or even make! Try doing a home energy review to help determine your savings.. While a majority of states have net metering laws, not all do. Make sure to check if yours does.

    Property Tax Incentives

    How we all hate paying property taxes. Many states provide exemptions, exclusions or credits for homes with solar power. Because every state has different laws about this the potential for savings will vary. Check out what your state does.

    Rebate Programs

    States and utilities offer rebate programs to those who install solar energy systems. They say they do this to promote solar power. This is probably true for the states, but not likely true of the utility companies. I suspect they would prefer to have a monopoly on power production.

    As usual, the programs vary from state to state. By the way, this is good. It is better then the Federal government doing a program and taking away some states rights in the process. Most of the programs come in the form of rebates ranging from a few hundred dollars to $4,000 or more.

    About a year before I discoverer the Power4Home course my wife and I went to one of those free dinner presentations where they did some demonstrations of how to reduce our power bill by buying some solar panels and installing some aluminum sheeting in our attic.

    We did have them install the aluminum sheeting in our attic, as that was fairly inexpensive. And it did reduce our power bill some. But the solar panels were going to cost us about $10,000.00, which was way above our budget. We did not have them installed.

One of the guides I received with the course also showed my how to make my own wind turbine to further reduce my power bill.

    I like the course because it includes both video and printed instructions. The printed manuals show exactly what materials are needed to construct the solar panels or wind turbine, and where is the best place to purchase them. Then they show step by detailed step, with color photographs, exactly how to construct the system.

    The manuals do contain time and cost saving tips along the way, such as the suggestion to buy cells that already have the ribbons attached. This saves money and also allows you to skip several steps in the building process.

    One of the nice things about the solar panels is that they do not contain any moving parts that can break down or make noise.

    A home energy review show that currently in the United States about 1% of homes are powered by solar energy. The power companies, big oil companies, and related industries do not want you to know that you can create your own free electricity. The reason is simple: they lose money if you make your own electricity.

    In addition, if you make enough of your own electricity you will have some to spare. This would mean that you are now selling electricity back to the power company and they now pay you for what you are feeding into the power grid.

    I call the electricity that you create with your own solar system free because once you have bought the materials and constructed the unit, your expense is over. It is a one time expense and you reduce your energy bill for every month starting in the month you install the system.

    You can make as many units as you want. You own the plans for them. A few of the people that make a unit will discover that they not only enjoy the savings, but that they also enjoyed making the unit enough that they want to turn it into a business, selling completed units to neighbors.

    Solar power works best where you have a lot of sun. If your home is surrounded by trees then the wind turbine might work better for you.

    If you live in the country then you might want to use both wind power and solar power.

    If you live in a city then the solar panels would probably work best for you.

  • The sun is always shining somewhere on this planet Earth. Those sun rays contain power which can be harnessed and used. Using that power is becoming increasingly attractive from an economic and environmental aspect. If you’re thinking of going solar with your own homemade electricity, you need to know the components. You may want to do a home energy review.

    Solar Components

    Solar systems are generally considered electric platforms, and they have unique components. Here’s some of the jargon you are going to need to be familiar with before buying or making a solar system.

    1. Photovoltaic Cell – This is known as a PV cell and it is the key piece of any solar platform. The PV cell is typically a small cell containing a silicon substance under glass. When the sun hits the cell, the silicon undergoes an electrical reaction that creates a charge. The electrical charge is collected by small wires.

    2. Solar Panel – The solar panel is a collection of solar cells joined as a unit in a frame. One panel by itself usually does not produce a lot of electricity.

    3. Solar System – A solar system is an interconnected set of solar panels. This is what you see on the roofs of homes and businesses. A solar system converts enough sunlight into electricity to provide most or all of the power required by a home. Solar systems are also known as a photovoltaic system,

    4. Orientation – Where and how a solar system is placed is very important. To maximize the homemade electricity production and thus gain the maximum amount of electricity, the panels have to be oriented to receive the maximum amount of sunlight.

    5. Direct Current – A type of electricity that flows in only one direction. Solar cells produce direct current electricity.

    6. Alternating Current – Electricity that flows in both directions. AC power is used by utilities and in practically all appliances and machines in a home.

    7. Inverter – Since a solar system produces DC current and your home uses AC current, you need something to change DC into AC. This is the function on the inverter. It is a key component in a solar panel system. If your solar system produces more electricity then your home or business uses the excess can be fed back into a utility power grid system.

    Wind power is also another way of creating your own electricity. Wind power and solar power both rely on the sun, either indirectly or directly.

    Obviously, there are a wide variety of systems for converting sunlight into homemade electricity. Making yourself familiar with the above solar system components is a good place to start.
